The March Mullet Campaign for Men’s Mental Health raised over $26,000 helping advance youth mental health programing
Apr 1, 2021
Fort McMurray, April 1st – The participants of the March Mullet Campaign are cutting off their Tennessee waterfalls and the parties in the back after an incredibly successful campaign during the month of March. The mullet hairstyle was a symbol for change that helped dismantle stigma and started the conversation about men reaching out for support.
According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, mental illness is comparable between men and women, but men are less empowered to seek help. Four of every five suicides are male. Starting the conversation about mental health is a crucial step towards mental wellbeing.
Emma Jones, CMHA Marketing and Community Relations Manager said “We saw the largest impact that our region has seen since the birth of the March Mullet Campaign in Fort McMurray. We are incredibly grateful to all those who participated, sponsored and donated. We had 21 participants that cut their hair into a mullet, including two young gentleman Zachary, age 2 and Hudson, age 7. Hudson individually raised over $2,100 and we are so proud of him. CMHA Wood Buffalo would also like to thank sponsors, Tommy Guns, Harvard Broadcasting, Paddy McSwiggins and Voigt Harley Davidson for their outstanding support and contributions. A very special thank you to Team Mullets for Mantha who’s passion and dedication was what helped make this year’s campaign such a success. We couldn’t do what we do without everyone’s compassion and generosity!”
The $26,000 + funding raised during the campaign will help advance youth mental health programming within the CMHA Wood Buffalo Recovery College. Building a solid youth mental health program will not only reduce the amount of suffering in our young people and their families but also contribute to a healthy adult population in the future.
CMHA Wood Buffalo plans to provide young people ages 12-24 with various coping strategies to work through mental health challenges, gain self-awareness and emotional awareness. Focus will be on increasing the sources of strength and resilience with problem solving stress/anxiety management and mental wellness strategies.
Now more than ever our call to action is to take better care of each other and for CMHA Wood Buffalo that looks like grassroot, community-based programing with a focus on youth mental health.
