First Responders Golf Tournament raises more than $33,000 for mental health in Wood Buffalo

(Fort McMurray, AB – September 23, 2024) The Canadian Mental Health Association are proud to release the total raised for our First Responders Golf Tournament was $33,237.95.
Held on Friday, September 5th & 6th at the Miskanaw Golf Course, the tournament saw over 190 golfers sign up to take part over the two days. Nearly 50 First Responders were treated Thursday to an exclusive nine-hole scramble, a banquet and a concert from Max Noseworthy to cap off the evening. Sponsored by local businesses, the call was placed out to Firefighters, Police, EMS, Health Care and Veterans.
Friday’s public tournament was a full sellout with 148 golfers out on the course. Following a great round of golf, food and activities – attendees gathered outside the Pro Shop for the 19th Hole Afterparty, sponsored by Rivers Casino & Entertainment Centre. This event featured more food, live music from Matty Parlee and the Local Hero Foundation Helicopter Ball Drop which saw one lucky winner walk away with $2,350.00.
A large chunk of money was raised by the Ultimate Raffle Packages, headlined by a BBQ Lovers package which featured a 5-burner Pit Boss smoker donated by Home Hardware & Building Centre of Fort McMurray and the Adventurer package which featured gym and yoga memberships, travel accessories and a stand up paddleboard from Beyond Adventures YMM. Among the other packages to choose from were the Music Lovers package which will send a winner to Edmonton to see Arkells this November as well as concerts throughout Fort McMurray such as Keyano Theatre’s upcoming Secret Artist series and CMHA’s own Charity Jam & Silent Auction set for February 2025. A prime rib party at The Canadian Brewhouse and Keyano Huskies season tickets headlined a Sports Lover package, and a Kids Fun pack featured a Pizza Party & Airport Tour for 10 kids from the Fort McMurray International Airport.
Other highlights this year included a Balloon popping game which featured hundreds of prizes donated by over 30 local restaurants, stores, fitness clubs, sports teams and entertainment venues. And attendees had their shot at seven different Hole in One prizes this year thanks to Northstar Ford, Voigt Harley Davidson and The District YMM.
“The First Responders Golf Tournament was once again a resounding success, uniting our community in support of those who protect us”, says Canadian Mental Health Association Wood Buffalo Executive Director Susan Goll. “Together, we raised awareness and funds for mental health, proving that when we come together, we can make a meaningful difference.”

The First Responders Golf Tournament will return in September 2025 for its 8th anniversary. Up next, CMHA will set its sights on the Walk for Mental Illness Awareness on October 10th, the Northern Lights Christmas release party December 7th at Kickin’ Horse YMM, and the return of the Push Up Challenge as well as the Charity Jam & Silent Auction in February 2025.
